The Goal
Produce motion graphics, aligning with a fashion designer's vision, to be shown on four large-scale LED walls during a fashion show.
The Result
I worked with a team of peers to produce these graphics as the background of Beyond Fashion, RIT's annual fashion show, in fall 2025.
The Process
The designs this year were even more focused on Vignelli and his life's work, more broadly than just his tableware and lamps. The path for the models differed slightly from the previous year, but the layout of screens in the room was roughly the same. I chose to hone my skills in After Effects, focusing on the principles outlined in the Vignelli Canon while taking inspiration from the fashion designer to whom I was assigned.
I also produced some supplemental graphics for pre- and post- show entertainment — some quotes from Vignelli, and a message congratulating my assigned designer on her retirement. The latter involved a background composed of several layers. I took the words "Beyond Fashion" and animated them like two ticker tapes, staggered on top of each other; using the letters as a mask, I applied a grid (in keeping with the Vignelli theme) and then a simple choker to make the sharp edges of the letters and grid meld together a little. My aim with this animation in particular was to make something relevant if you really paid attention to the letters, but otherwise just mildly engaging enough to remain comfortable behind the more important message.
